"ECHOES OF CHANGE: THE GREAT VOWEL SHIFT AND ITS TRANSFORMATIVE IMPACT ON ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION AND DIALECTS"
Abstract
The great change of vowel (GVS) marks a crucial phonological reform in the history of the English language, occurring from the late fourteenth century to the early eighteenth century. It represents one of the most significant changes that affect English pronunciation and literacy, encapsulating a transition that would lead to the phonetic structure of modern English. After the average English period, GVs fundamentally altered the way vowels were pronounced, distinguishing the average English from their modern equivalent and reformulating dialects throughout England.
